Construction City- Connection between Residents and Bridges

“Construction City” describes the process by which urban areas are being developed and expanded through the construction of new buildings, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. In this theme, we are highlighting the bridges in Tsuen Wan, which they are constantly adapting to meet the needs of their inhabitants and building up the connection between different malls and estates. Tsuen Wan is the city of flyovers and the one with the most bridges in Hong Kong. Metro stations link more than 20 retail centers and housing developments. There is little doubt that Hong Kong is the only city with this type of building. The unique feature of this bridge is that it is a winding structure. The overpass passes near older-style homes on some of its corners. Those positions are even more opaque plastic plates to protect residents’ privacy. The bridge of Tsuen Wan residents has become an indispensable road. If there is a careful observation of the community, except that the division has changed from zero. In addition to the special design of the viaduct itself, the people and objects on the viaduct are also part of it. Upon exiting the metro station, you will inevitably be introduced to various broadband vendors and see Iran in various promotions. Walking around the bridge surrounded by major residential and shopping malls such as Fuk Loi Estate, Tsuen Wan Square, and Nina Mall all have different characteristics. However, the Mills has become a must-see attraction in Tsuen Wan in recent years. After reconstruction, the original factory design is retained, but modern and hipster designs are added, and each factory is connected by a glass bridge. Factories include the Textile Culture and Arts Center and the hipster branch of the boutique cafe. It turns out that Tsuen Wan is a community associated with flyovers. It is not only the place that connects, but also the connection between the residents and their lives, and it is also a change in the architectural age.

Regarding the conduction method, this research is mainly through field inspections, plus the changes in building or design in Tsuen Wan who have lived in Tsuen Wan. For residents, the bridge is an indispensable part of life. Through the online information, I will understand how this special urban planning is formed.

Shooting techniques

  1. Establishing shot

An establishing shot is a wide shot that is used at the beginning of a scene to establish the location, the mood, and the architecture. And it allows viewers to have a sense of place and to set the tone for the scene that follows. This can be particularly effective when shooting a video of the Tsuen Wan Bridge system, as its large and complex structure can be overwhelming without proper context.

  1. Montage

Montage is a sequence of shots that are edited together to condense time or convey a series of events. It is often to show the passage of time, the completion of a task, or the development. And the video has shown how the traditional bridge is changing to be modern (The Mills).

  1. Pan-Shot

Pan-Shot is a movement in which the camera rotates horizontally while keeping its vertical axis in a fixed position. This creates a sweeping motion that can be used to follow a subject or to show a large area. And the video shows the modern ambiance and the Mills’ glass bridge.

Other than these 3 shooting techniques, the video’s narration was presented in first-person. It can provide a personal perspective of the location. This can help the viewer to feel like they are seeing the location through the eyes of the person shooting the video and can create a more intimate and personal connection with the location. In the later editing part, it is easier for the audience to understand the concept of the photographer and the meaning of the film by adding subtitles. The film was adjusted into a cold color system. I wonder if the audience could notice that under the epidemic, the residents were carrying a mask, lost their smiles, and also caused the bridge to lose the vitality of the past. In the end, the film through different types of bridges to show the theme of this time-how the building drives the connection between people and the community so that we can reflect on and pay more attention to things around us. It must be closely related to us.

  1. Chak Chung says:

Your video walks through the spaces of Tseun Wan’s footbridges and how it connects different spaces for pedestrians to access. There needs to be more analysis on how these bridges builds a community for the users and its effect on urban life. Your text will benefit from comprehensive research on the bridge typology and transit oriented development- which is common but not unique to Hong Kong’s urbanism. You may take the point of view of a single resident of the area and study how the construction of the infrastructure help facilitate his/her day-to-day to tighten your scope instead of just being a presentation of the footbridge.
