Reading response 2-Communal After-Living: Asian Ghosts and the City

This article mainly discusses three Asian apartment horror movies with different themes and analyzes why ghost movies and ghost stories have different styles according to the different structural characteristics of cities in each region.

The first theme is adjacent communities, which mainly appear in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.

The second theme is that the biggest fear is loneliness, which mainly occurs in Japan, South Korea, an economically developed country.

The last theme is that ghosts are the failure of economic success, aiming to continue to migrate the population from the countryside to the city. The main example is Bangkok, which is the representative of most Southeast Asian cities.

I want to mainly analyze the ghost movies in Hong Kong. Most of the ghost movies in China are shot in Hong Kong.

The characteristic of Hong Kong classic ghost films is that they usually contain the following elements:

1. The atmosphere of terror is strong.

The horror atmosphere in Hong Kong ghost films is often relatively strong, creating a horrible atmosphere through sound effects, pictures, lighting and other means. The audience will feel a strong sense of tension and fear when watching the film.

2. Mysterious storyline

The storyline of Hong Kong ghost films is often mysterious, which contains a lot of suspense and thriller elements. The audience needs to uncover the mystery of the story through plot reasoning, which is also an important charm of these films.

3. Design of horror scenes

The design of horror scenes in Hong Kong ghost films is often unique, including ghosts, ghosts, underworld, cemetery and other elements. The design of these scenes often makes the audience feel very scary and scary.

Ghost movies in Hong Kong mainly describe the complex relationship between the living and the ghost.

Most of the ghost films in Hong Kong are haunted because the land is scarce, and many people are not properly buried, so ghosts can only roam the earth.

There is an old Chinese saying, “It is safe to enter the earth”, which means that only when the deceased is buried in the ground can they rest in peace and sleep in the underground. However, due to the scarcity of land in Hong Kong, most of the dead had to be cremated or buried at sea. The cremated ashes can only be stored on a specific shelf, which leads to the phenomenon of the soul floating out of the box in ghost movies.

Hong Kong ghost films make good use of this regional characteristics and create their own thriller plot. I think this is one of the characteristics of Hong Kong ghost films that are different from other regions.
