Field Trip 2- MTR

The MTR

Theme: Lines

  • Isolation: This short video shows the movement of people entering the train while the lines of the poles and the lights of the train remains static, showing the isolation in speed.
  • Static Subject, Dynamic Camera: This shows the static line of tactile paving is another form of line that can be found in the MTR.
  • Dynamic Subject, Static Camera: This captures the linear movement of the train in the MTR.
  • Stop-motion: This post-production shows arrays of photos of various stations in the MTR lines, expressing the lines that are drawn through the points of the stations.
  • Layered Screen: This video expresses the numerous lines disappearing and appearing in the numerous, confusing escalators in the MTR.
    • This method was used to emphasise the theme of ‘lines’ in the topic of MTR. Among various lines we can find in the MTR station, one of my focuses was on the lines on the escalators. The escalator has a lot of lines from its long, linear structure, to all the small lines like the conveyor hand-rail and the long lines of people standing on the escalator. I thought this method of post-production expressed the confusing, chaotic feeling I feel when using the escalator, despite its simple repetitive and linear properties.

I think you have chosen a simple element and created some very interesting observations about it. I think you can convey a clearer message to the viewers if you just focus on one type of lines. For example, you can chose floor lines, and follow the tactile paving across the station or capture the legs of people crossing that line.
