[FIELD-HOMEWORK 1] PROTECTIVE CUSTODY

PROTECTIVE CUSTODY

Space: Bedroom

Camera location: From interior to exterior

1.Wide angle

Rise and shine.

2. Aerial

Descending from the bunk.

3. Focus

Barred from the outside world .

4. First-person view

No spare moment goes to waste.

5. Contrast

Cabin fever.

This photo captures the silhouette of myself amidst weeks of maintaining distance from the outside world. Strong contrasts between light and dark is used here to convey the dullness and uneasiness in life as one stays in enclosed environments with little social interaction due to the viral outbreak, which is a necessary yet disconcerting process.

6. Seriality

Losing track of time.

7. Crop

Pondering on how long was I kept at home due to the outbreak as I look into the closet.

8. Skewed angle

Grounded by uncertainty.

9. Worm’s angle

Heading down the hallway for some air.

10. Perspective

Being barred within the block.

11. Zoom

…or  the miasma being barred from the residents.

12. View frame

Descending down the stairwell.

You demonstrate a good understanding of the tasks. Your photographs and annotations offer revealing insights into your opinion about life under domestic “quarantine” during this pandemic. There is a clear and consistent relationship between your choice of title “protective custody” and the images presented. The opening images set a strong tone for the series, beginning with the metal bars of your bed (wide), subsequently following with the bars of your bedroom window (focus) and the corridor bars in your residential complex (zoom). All of which work in complimentary nature to the idea of self-induced imprisonment for pursuit of protecting oneself. Overall this is a strong set of images and articulate description for chiaroscuro, well done!
