[Video essay] Hybrid City

Video: https://youtu.be/M0tu4hwFMBM Theme: As the political and cultural center, Beijing represents the history of more than 5000 years of China. It contains The Imperial Palace, The Tiananmen Square, and countless traditional alleyways. I took the first part of the video shots in Houhai, which is a Lake Park with a long history. Many old hutongs and courtyards still sit around the lake and store the old memories back in the 1980s. Although there were countless skyscrapers and modern buildings built within 50 years, the area around Houhai has never been destructed. So it can be said that Houhai still reserves

SITE: DORMITORY Director: LIN Mengfei SCENE: LIN Mengfei SUBTITLE: LIN Mengfei 1. Introduction Inspiration This video is a visual presentation of my real life experiences and reflections to the built environment. The initial inspiration mainly comes from a long period self-quarantine in a small bedroom with a huge window on one wall. After having an interview with my classmates, we shared the feeling of having quarantine in the dormitory. It is slightly lonely and we both realised that we were born to love the outdoors. During the quarantine, we tells the time naturally by looking through windows. Pink morning light shines

Title: Disappearing City Site: Park Director: Peng Ziqian Background music: Starry Sky(星茶会) by Huiche; Illuminate by Peter Orbit YouTube link: https://youtu.be/R19AswVB3rI Theme: Parks benefit people’s physical and mental health as green public areas that provide residents with exercise and strengthen community cohesion (Holland, 2018). However, park visitation changed considerably during the COVID-19 pandemic, although the nature in which this change occurred varied across countries around the world (Geng et al., 2021). The theme of my research is: what are the causes of the “disappearance” of parks during the COVID-19 pandemic? Hypothesis: The “disappearing” parks are related to national policies on Neocon

Theme The fifth wave of COVID-19 occurred in Hong Kong due to the introduction of the mutant strain Omicron into the city in early January 2022. As the number of positive tests increased from dozens to hundreds or even thousands, schools in Hong Kong also announced that they would stop offline teaching and not allow non-essential students to enter the campus. In early February, the University of Hong Kong sent an email to students officially starting online courses this semester. This is also the beginning of the ‘ Disappearing City’ embodied in the University of Hong Kong. Due to the increasing situation

Script I usually walk out of the apartment at 9:15 in the morning. And then I walk up the hills under the apartment to get to the university. Along the road, I could see some people walking along the sidewalk, or crossing the street, possibly heading out to work. This is a scene that I once thought had disappeared due to the pandemic. Now it is such a pleasure to be able to see the situation here getting better and people can get back to their life again. After studying in the library, I sometimes would go for some snack

Having moved to Sham Shui Po for more than three years now, I’d never stepped in, or even noticed any alleyways. These edged spaces seemed too dangerous for a girl to go in alone. So, I took this project as an opportunity to really understand my community. All the alleyway footage in this film was taken within a 15 minutes’ walk from where I live. Dated back to the 1880s, larger parcels of land rented from the government started to be divided in the middle. The lanes allowed waste disposal, daylight, and air to enter from the back façade.

Since most people past by these spaces, they’re often overlooked. Initially, even I thought there wasn’t much to say other than the space’s simplicity. But, upon closer observation, these spaces carry a lot of history and life. Since Hong Kong as a whole deals with the issue of ‘not having enough space,’ you can start to see how people make use

Theme The assigned site was a ‘rooftop’ which was then expanded upon as “Ecological City”. It explores how despite Hong Kong enduring high levels of pollution as a result of its heavy urbanization, some individual farmers and architects took advantage of unutilized roof spaces for rooftop gardens, known as “green roofs”. Green roofs can be simple as vegetation integrated on top of residential buildings or walkways (such as the new Kai Tak sky garden), or gardens and farms that produces edible produce on the available space. The 2 sites explored – Hysan Place and HKU rooftop garden (now defunct and

Description of theme My assigned space is elevator. Public elevators work more than as lifting devices when transporting people in urban cities. As people have to stay in this narrow and closed space, the elevators have become perfect space to spread information. The study shows that a person would receive 34 Gb of information everyday. Therefore, the ability to catch and filter information has been a helpful skill that every modern citizen should learn. Vision and hearing are the two most important senses we use in normal lives, same in the elevators. These two senses are different: people have the

Title: Restless City   Credits: Shot and Directed by Dai Jiarui (Music: Oil from the film There Will Be Blood)   Description of the theme: Hangzhou, as a big city that has always been under the shadow of Shanghai, has become panic-stricken after the latter being locked down due to the epidemic prevention policy. Interestingly, in addition to the surging anxiety of the residents, on the surface, the government’s large-scale construction in preparation for the upcoming Asian Olympic Games also demonstrates a kind of restless mood in the city. The aggressive restless on the surface and the secret restless are
