[Field-Homework 2] Empty Mall

Infrastructure: I chose a shopping mall as the infrastructure because the public transportation system and other public facilities were almost shut down.

Video 1:

From low position looking up: No one passed by and the broadcast warned customers to wear masks.

Video 2:

Camera rotating: Medical staff checking customers’ health situation at the entrance of the mall

Video 3:

Camera static/Fast motion: The bubble tea shop is the only shop in the mall where guests gather.

Video 4:

Camera static/Fast motion: Looking down from the fourth floor, few people passed in two minutes

Description: Camera was placed at the fourth floor and recorded from up to bottom, including three escalators into the view. The original video was two and a half minutes long, and I had to edit it into fast motion because there were too few customers passing by. As a result of the epidemic, people have recently been afraid or unwilling to go to such large public places as shopping malls, which the video reflects very well. This video contrasts this larger space with few passers-by by using a comparably macro perspective and extremely fast speed, vividly showing people’s vigilance over large public places during the epidemic.

Video 5:

Camera rotating: Some stores are closed, others have no or few customers even if they are open

Good attempt to try different camera techniques to convey specific feelings and attitude with regard to the subject. Overall the quality of the videos need to be improved however as they are coming across as default and not calibrated. Why did you decide to put the camera low in video 1? Is this a young child’s point of view or someone sitting on the floor? Compare this with video 5. Is one conveying something very different from the other? Consider the technique more tightly in relation to the subject/issue you wish to highlight. And instead of using the same fast motion for both videos 3 and 4, would you consider one of them to be in slow motion instead?
