[Field-Homework 2] Stars as usual, or not?

[1: Static Camera + Framing] Peek

The static shot of the door where the workers peak-out and gaze at every ferry comes and leaves the port. One can consider this as a spot to observe/seek stories, stories of strangers, through the narrow hole taken on the wall.

The narrow frame is mundane. However, under current circumstances, it does not only depicted the everyday sight of the workers but also sort-of mirrored: How isolated people under the outbreak of the virus encounter and collect information through their “small window”(both can be physical windows in their living space or the phone).

[In regard to the light, the walkway of the port is very dim, the gentle light penetrates through the door and gives a light spot in people’s sights, adding more subtle meaning to the scene]

[2: tracking camera] Work

To the workers: Is the corona-virus causing any difference to his life? His work at the port will still encounter people. The only difference to him is the thin mask.

[3: unexpected] Leave

Shooting from a secret spot below, separated by a net wall, of people hurried to leave the boat (a symbol of being trapped?).

[4: Framing] Breathe

The image of another ferry passing through the window. The camera approached the window frame to keep focusing on the ferry and eventually “escaped” from the frame. A transfer from inside to outside. A fresh breath.

[5: Cropping] Imagine

In this scene, the heads of the passengers on the upper deck are cropped. Though it’s unavailable to see, everyone can anticipate the existence of masks on their faces

(Extra) [6: Stop-Motion] Isolate

In this scene, the water moves while the loner is static. For once the people on the ferry were much more lively compare to the water outside.

  1. Ina Wu says:

Appreciate how your collection introduces the “breathing experience” that one would have when heading out during the pandemic, the mundane star ferry trip becomes extraordinary. As nature and outdoor environments have become so scarce for people under quarantine every bit is appreciated. Specifically your ISOLATE clip, it conveys the message with adequate filming techniques. To further improve, consider curating the narration between each video.
