The bustling metropolis of Hong Kong, renowned for its vibrant cityscape and rich cultural heritage, is facing a disconcerting phenomenon. Jordan Road, once a thriving artery in the heart of the city, has become a poignant symbol of the rapid urban transformation and the consequent disappearance of its historical charm. This video explores the theme of the vanishing cityscape along Jordan Road, shedding light on the specific elements that make it a microcosm of Hong Kong’s changing landscape.

Jordan Road, located in the Yau Tsim Mong District, has witnessed Hong Kong’s evolution over the years. Once lined with colonial-era buildings and traditional shophouses, it held a distinct flavor that reflected the city’s cultural and architectural heritage. The video captures the nostalgia associated with these disappearing structures, showcasing their unique architectural styles, intricate facades, and ornate detailing.

As Hong Kong experienced rapid economic growth and urbanization, the demand for modern infrastructure escalated. Jordan Road became a prime target for redevelopment, with towering skyscrapers and commercial complexes replacing the old low-rise buildings. The video juxtaposes the old and new, highlighting the stark contrast and the impact of urban renewal on the city’s identity.

The transformation of Jordan Road represents more than just physical changes. It signifies the erosion of traditional culture and the diminishing sense of community. The video captures the vibrancy of the street’s once-thriving markets and local businesses, juxtaposing it with the sterile and impersonal nature of modern developments. The loss of these communal spaces is mourned, as they were once the soul of the neighborhood.

The redevelopment of Jordan Road has also exacerbated social inequalities. The video delves into the consequences of gentrification, showcasing the displacement of long-time residents and the rising cost of living. It examines the implications of this transformation on the fabric of the community, shedding light on the disparities that have emerged within the area.

Amidst the vanishing cityscape, the video highlights the efforts of preservationists and activists striving to salvage remnants of the old Jordan Road. It explores initiatives to protect and repurpose historical buildings, emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation and the need to balance progress with heritage conservation.

In the face of Hong Kong’s rapid urban transformation, the theme of the disappearing city along Jordan Road resonates deeply. Through its exploration of the historical significance, urban redevelopment, cultural erosion, social divide, and preservation efforts, the video captures the multifaceted aspects of this complex issue. By shining a spotlight on Jordan Road, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving the unique identity and heritage of cities in the midst of progress.

Method:
In order to explore the theme of the disappearing city in Hong Kong’s Jordan Road, I visited Jordan Road myself to observe the life and environment there. I then proceeded to gaining secondary research experience, via reviewing academic literature of HK culture and Jordan Road’s historical background.

Research Methodology:

Literature Review:
I began the research process with literature reviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of the historical significance, urban development, cultural aspects, and preservation efforts related to Jordan Road. Academic papers, books, articles, and reputable online sources are consulted to gather relevant information and insights.

Primary data collection involves conducting interviews with local residents, preservationists, urban planners, and community leaders who have first-hand knowledge and experiences related to Jordan Road. Their perspectives provide valuable insights into the changing landscape, cultural erosion, and social impact. For instance, a local resident mentioned how he sees his favorite local stores closing down slowly every few years, which is quite sorrowful for him who highly values the traditional culture of HK. Additionally, data from government reports, architectural records, and historical documents are collected to support the narrative.

Visiting Jordan Road in person allows for an immersive experience and a first hand observation of the disappearing cityscape. I explored the area, capturing cultural landmarks, bustling markets, and community spaces. This documentation serves as visual evidence of the transformation and helps to convey the message effectively.

Video Production Process:

Based on the research findings, a clear concept and narrative structure for the video was developed. To put together the video as someone who does not have any past experience with video editing, I watched a number of tutorials on using imovie. I compiled the most representative photos of Jordan Road into my video, adding —- to create a narrative and highly the theme of “disappearing city”.

Overall, by conducting thorough research, collecting primary and secondary data, and creating a video from scratch, I not only gained a deep undering in the cultural aspects of Jordan Road HK and its architectural changes, but also how to communicate what I’ve researched and observed in person into a compelling video.
