GONE WITH THE LIGHT

Yichang (Hubei, China)

This is a science fiction film which is talked about love. It said that a mysterious light beam shines on a city, and a strange phenomenon happened—- some people disappeared for no reason. Finally, scientists find that these people who disappeared because they are in true love, and the people who do not disappear may have some problems with their affection. As a result, “survivors” try to find the reasons due to problematic relationships.

Yiling Yangtze River Bridge is the 11th bridge of Yangtze River in Hubei province, it is 3246m and put into use in 2001.

The first picture is in reality now, and the second one is in the movie. First of all, there is no huge difference on the bridge, but the atmosphere is totally different. It is true that the air condition in this place is not really good, but the fog in the movie is much heavier. Also, this place is always energetic since I was born, however, we only feel silence in the film.

This is a scene at the beginning of the movie, different people discuss what is love, all of them are confused about it and do not know the answer, so the thick fog may try to create an atmosphere of confusion. At the same time, silent environment may help audience to join to think about this question together.

This is the one of the main tunnels in Yichang— Yunji Tunnel. It is put into use in 2000 and motivate the growth of this city.

The former one is from movie and the later one is in reality. I have to say that this tunnel is located in the centre of the city, so it is very bustling in real life. Many cars through it in the evening rush hour. By contrast, in the movie, only the actor goes through the tunnel. The light in the movie is colder and the environment is darker.

From the discussion, we believe that director wants to create a peaceful and depressing atmosphere. In the movie, this man is one of the survivors which means he believes that his wife does not love him from heart. Then, he decides to have a relationship with another women, because he believes that lady is his true love. He invites that women in the hotel, but he stops to start the new relationship in the end, and this scene shows he is on his way to home. Riding in a quiet tunnel combines with his expression, we can see the man is a little bit reluctant to give up the women and more determined to choose his wife.

All in all, the main difference would be shops besides the road, some of old stores moved away and new shops join in. Streets does not change, but no familiar figure to me on the streets anymore.

It is interesting that the two sets you analysed from the film are a harbour (?) and a tunnel. Asking a question about the transversality of space through De Certeau’s Practices of Everyday Life and what would it mean in the journey of finding true love would help you to shape your line-of-inquiry, and therefore better lead your readers through your opinions. In addition, you could also compare how space is appropriated in the film vs how it actually is utilised in real life. This way, you could also narrate how the film gives meaning to space/place. Building up your argument through one of the key concepts we have discussed in the class would help you to analyse the site because it provides you with an analytical lens. Lastly, remember to put a proper reference to your writing. The citation must be incorporated in the essay, both for cited text and images which are not yours.
