Field trip 1 – Alleyways

Below are sights from the alleyways near Mongkok ( MTR exit D3) and also the alleyways near the Temple Street in Jordon.

Wide Angle

The use of wide angles showcases how alleyways can sometimes be quite spacious, so much so that restaurants can actually use the space for their seating area.

Zoom

The elusive alley cat walking along the edge of the wall is hard to capture at the eye level and can only captured by zooming in.

Focus

The rat trap is one of the many items one can find in the alleyways – this particular one has a red sausage as its bait.

Crop

The blue and red striped canvas covers are another prominent feature of the alleyways, which i highlighted by using the crop framing – placing them strategically in the right foreground and left background.

Aerial

This particular aerial view of the alleyway gives a distant and cold feeling to the alleyways, when in fact the alleyways are full of life with many people and many different activities.

Worm’s eye

Unwanted lottery tickets strewn onto the alleyway ground.

First Person View

An elderly man sits at the entrance of the alleyway to check his winnings (if any).

Skewed Angle

As alleyways are the back of stores, there will inevitably be rubbish present , however, surely, there must be some boundaries because the alleyways are also where many other activities (businesses, resting, labor etc) take place.

Perspective

Cutting through the alleyways will take you to the main streets.

View Frame

A worker washing dishes in the kitchen, seen through the back door.

Series

Mr Ma (pseudonym) has had his shop at this alleyway for 40 years. He works on the ovens (烤炉) that is used to make everyone’s beloved BBQ pork. He makes new ones as well as repairs old ones. He first picked up the trade from his father but also supplemented his skills by taking relevant courses at various institutes. His business is legitimate and recognized by the government. He continues to stay in the alley because rent for a shop space is too expensive.

Contrast

Wear and tear or unfinished paint job?

I appreciate your effort that you have interviewed Mr. ‘Ma’, and got up on a roof. It might have been more fruitful if you would have stayed in one particular back alley, and captured all your chosen moments there. Imagine the colorful canvas from above, zoomed in, and out again.
