Field Trip 3: Lippo Centre (Hanka)

Hong Kong is a city where modernity is at its peak, driven by the diversity of innovative masterminds who contributed to the layers of concrete and steel to shape the hardware of this city. It is often based on the use of adaptation, like bio mimicry, where observations from nature are transferred into new design concepts. In the case of the Lippo Centre, serving as the headquarters of a sci-fi robotics company “HANKA”, it does have its exterior inspired by the organics like the joints of a spinal structure or the biological forms of a beetle. Moreover, it incorporates geometric shapes to evoke a sense of futuristic uniqueness. It looks as if the interiors of a mechanism is flipped out to the exterior, syncing to the philosophical concept of heterotopia in the context of Hong Kong. Therefore, the mood board showcases collages of texture and architectural models to convey the idea of analogous design, and use drawings and images to demonstrate the process of design in both the reality and in Ghost in the Shell.
