Field Trip Two: Central Escalators

In the following 5 videos, the motion of people at the Central escalators was captured as the subject.

Tracking

The camera was placed in the middle to track the upward movement of the escalator, contrasting the downward movement of people walking down from the staircase.

Through tracking the journey on the escalator, the people on the escalator is relatively static comparing to the ones walking down from the staircase, which is interesting since actually they are all dynamic but through tracking such relative sense was formed. And by placing the camera in the middle, it also contrasts the speed, direction, and stability of the people on the escalator and the ones walking down the stairs, this result in an interesting scene.

The camera is placed at an unexpected location

The camera was placed at a lower position as to focus on the legs’ movement, contrasting the static and dynamic motion of different users of the escalators.

Stop-motion and repetition

Stop-motion was used to feature the back and forth motion of the person and repetition could further emphasize the movement.

Differentiation of speed

By decreasing the speed of the downward and upward motion parts, the significant change of travelling direction during the journey is emphasized.

Static camera, dynamic subject

Capturing some people walking to the left and some to the right simultaneously.

It seems that following and observing people is your main focus, I wonder if your approach should have focused on the journey and speed of one person particularly. Through this focus, you would have one continues element in comparison to all other experiments
