Fieldtrip 2: Tram – Curves

The five point of views focus on the idea of curves. The straight and parallel tracks for trams are symbolic. But to me, curves possess more qualities and offer more possibilities.

High Angle

The high angle shot puts emphasis on the parallel curved tracks. The curves allow the tram to change its direction, the flexibility of curvilinear design or curves itself enables changes.

Low Angle and Framing

Using objects (stores, buildings and cars) as a frame, viewers’ attention is naturally drawn to the curved tracks and the moving tram. The low angle shot provides a closer look of the tram as if viewers are almost hit by the tram.

Over-the-shoulder Shot

The camera is a first person narrative of the scene, it captures the activities inside the tram when the tram turns. The mono colour highlights the passengers’ response to the turn as well as lessen the significance of background (scenery outside the window).

Tracking Shot

The tram’s tracks act as a dolly’s tracks, this unintentionally creates a tracking shot of the man riding the bicycle parallel to the curved tracks.

Zooming Out

The camera first focuses on the ground where the parts of tracks disappear as the tram goes, but you may not notice because the tracks are continuous. The camera is slightly shifted up and zoomed out to show a bigger picture. The window frame acts as a little transition. The idea of curves is quite dominate in the latter part of the video as there are curved tracks and white road markings on the floor. This intrigues me to think what will happen if I highlight the tram’s tracks on the map? The parallel lines with different bends may actually form a simple and beautiful picture. Pure straight lines could not create such a beauty but curves add value into it.

Interesting focus at curve tram tracks with different angles and subjectivity! A certain special sound is produced by the friction of the tram and the curve tracks if you have noticed. Also, there are always visual tensions to view the surroundings as the distances change continuously between the tram and the surroundings.
How the tram tracks intervene with the elements on the road like what you said can make beautiful scenes but can also be a great analytical tool to show the urban planning of the city.
