[Fieldwork Homework 1] Unusual Reality

[Space: Studyplace]

[Camera Location: In-between]

[Task I]

1. Wide-angle

Unusual scenery of 7 pm, no one sitting on the bench or walking in the shopping area.

2. Zoom

Closed internal medicine department, with the ‘coronavirus announcement’ attached on the door.

3. Focus

South Korea now focuses on ‘Man Hee Lee’ on the news, a pseudo-religion leader. We are criticizing pseudo-religion for spreading coronavirus.

4. Crop

A person intently looking at someone who coughed in a cafe. Not taking off her mask even in the indoor.

5. Bird’s eye/ aerial

The cafe is having a lack of customers. No wonder owner-operators are crying nowadays.

6. Worm’s eye

Mask packaging everywhere, reached the highest demand for masks.

7. First-person view

Being alone at a cafe, look out through the window. Missing my people, socializing, outdoor activities.

8. Skewed angle

Losing the proper posture. Never stayed in one place for such a long time.

9. Perspective

Clearly shows only one place from that building opened, which is a clinic. Deeply appreciate all the medical workers worldwide.

10. View frame

Social Network Services (SNS) inevitably used, asking for help to escape from coronavirus prison.

11. Chiaroscuro / Contrast

Most people stay at home, spending time with their families. (Refer to Task II)

12. Seriality

Cafe Latte; Intaking caffein all-day from day-to-night and sleeps at 4 am.

[Task II]

‘Chiaroscuro / Contrast’

The contrast between reality and theory is well-shown by the effect. ‘Home’ is the safest place in this dangerous situation as the outside home is covered with coronavirus. The mono effect was added, clearly shows home as a bright side and outside the home as a dark side. However, we nowadays are ironically symbolizing ‘home’ as a ‘prison’. Although ‘home’ is bright and indicates ‘survival’, people inside are shoot as a dark form. The darkness expresses a psychological depression for being trapped in a coronavirus prison in reality, where society theoretically defines as the safest place.

  1. Annie Lye says:

Great title for this submission, especially in your choice of opening with the wide-angle image of the deserted shopping area street.
As for camera techniques, you demonstrated a fair understanding of the task, however, often confuse or fail to achieve the specific type of shot. We suggest that you find some examples of these camera angles online for inspiration. YouTube has many videos that are montages of specific camera techniques drawn from a broad range of films. Some particular shots from your set that could be improved are:
Bird’s Eye / Aerial – this is a view taken from directly above downwards as if you were a bird looking down. Here your image is looking at a tilted angle from above.
Focus – You seem to have confused this shot with “zoom”. Focus intends to show clearly the subject of choice in sharp detail while the surrounding imagery is blurred out.
On the other hand, your submission for chiaroscuro was particularly well done. It depicts a striking image of the voyeuristic gaze. Appreciate also your description of positioning the residential tower as a metaphorical “coronavirus prison”. This is in stark contrast to the rest of your photos and captions that illustrate an active and masked outdoor life that you lead during this outbreak period.
