The original reading highlights the impact of urbanization on isolation and loneliness by analyzing the film “Apt.” (2006), emphasizing the commodification of real estate and the consequent dissolution of human connections. In the tutorial, we discussed other causes of modern isolation, such as the use of technology. However, my tutor’s assertion that the internet exacerbates isolation may not fully capture the issue’s complexity. In my opinion, technology can negatively and positively affect social isolation.
On one hand, excessive reliance on the internet and technology could aggravate isolation. A study titled “Social Media Use and Perceived Social Isolation Among Young Adults in the U.S.” suggests that higher levels of social media use are associated with increased perceived social isolation.
On the other hand, technology has provided platforms for virtual interactions, enabling people to connect with loved ones regardless of physical distance. Online friendships and digital communication have become integral parts of many individuals ‘ social lives, reducing feelings of loneliness. Furthermore, Regis College suggests using technology to stave off social isolation and loneliness via virtual platforms like Zoom and sharing positive content.
Moreover, during the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person gatherings became dangerous, and people turned to technology, particularly social media, to stay connected with loved ones and avoid complete isolation (Geirdal et al., 2021). In this sense, social media saved us from complete isolation.
In conclusion, technology’s impact on isolation is complex; it may exacerbate or mitigate loneliness. Proper timing and methods of using technology are crucial to utilize technology to overcome loneliness maximally.
