Reading Response: Ackbar Abbas

The most impressive word in the article to me is “Generic cities”, these cities are lack of their own styles, and some people say that many asian cities belong to this type of cities, because many asian cities are fond of becoming a globalized city which erases their special forms . I do not think this view is right, we can use Hong Kong movies as an example, women who wear cheongsam is a typical symbol of Hong Kong, even though concrete jungles cover most space of the entire city.

My suggestion is that Hong Kong can discover more historical heritage which can form a typical image of the city instead of putting too much money on plenty of landmarks. After that, it will become a modern city with its own characteristics.

You picked up a couple of interesting things to unpack from Abbas’ article. However, you might want to consider composing them following certain logic of inquiries so that the readers could better understand your train of thoughts. For example, you opened your argument with “generic city” and your disagreement toward the perception of it. It would be worthwhile to, first, address, what aspect of that view that you are disagreeing with? Why would you think otherwise? What would be your take on the generic city? Also, elaborating a little bit on how cheongsam is comparable to the concrete jungle would also help to strengthen your example. By focusing your inquiries more on reasons and processes, you potentially develop a more critical lens toward the concept.
