Reading Response: Ackbar Abbas

The famous director Wang Xiaoshuai once said that film is the gaze at time. This reading discussed the relation between reel time and real time, as well as subjectivity and objectivity, where architecture means no more than a dwelling of temporality and an element of atmosphere. I am particularly interested in this topic as time is closely related to memory and dream in my opinion. George Lucas used to say that film is the art of constructing dreams. Indeed, idiosyncrasies of reel time, blunted as presenting characters’ whole life in 2 hours and sharp as focusing on slightest moments, are similar to that of dreams, detached as watching yourself as a stranger and authentic as pains are so real. No wonder why Edward Yang would say films triple the length of humans’ life. Watching films is like experiencing dreams, where something always happens when nothing does.

The comparison of time to dreams and memory is interesting. Some of the points you raised could be explained further, including the several quotes you cited so that the ideas in your response can be made clearer and can flow better. Do note that the deadline for each reading response is 24 hours after your tutorial timeslot. Also, I believe the title of the reading response should be “Reading Response: Giuliano Bruno”?

Many thanks for your response. I mistook the title. Previously I have submitted this reading response within the original deadline. Problem is that later I notice that it disappeared for some unknown reason. I have communicated with the tutorial team and they agree to let me post again. Also, I wonder if I would write more reading responses to earn more grades?
