Abbas, M. A. (1997). Hong Kong: Culture and the politics of disappearance
It has discussed about the different between space and place, which is space more like the x,y-coordinate on x,y-plane and place is the meaning of that coordinate. For example, HKU is located at Hong Kong Pokfulam Road, then HKU is a place and space is Hong Kong Pokfulam Road. It has also mentioned that the culture is disappearing til time to time, which because people focus on economic but not culture. Which cause our classic culture/ main culture are disappear, and that affect the design of Architecture. Also, the social perspective of people will also affect the design of Architecture, building of HSBC is an example. Western culture affected the original culture in Hong Kong. Yet, in my opinion, culture will not be disappear but hidden behind our main culture. For instance, view culture as a huge ice mountain, the main culture is the top of the mountain which out of water, and underneath, that is the basis of the culture, or call them hidden/invisible part. The original culture cashed with other culture and part of the original culture is sunk into water and a larger mountain is form, that should not call “disappear”, since it can still found in history and richen our culture basis.

An interesting reflection that seems to intertwine Certeau’s concepts of space and place with Abbas.
