[Reading Response: Ackbar Abbas]

The essay ‘Cinema, The City, And The Cinematic’ want to tell readers the concepts of generic city and exorbitant city. In fact, I feel confused on these two words. What I understand and agree with the writer is that films can give people from other city to know the view of an urban space. For example, the film does not mention where the city is. But the audiences can guess by looking the roads, the style of architecture or some famous buildings. Maybe a generic city is look like the picture I saw on tutorial. Every building looks almost the same, the cars are same type and people wearing style are same. Then, maybe exorbitant city means a place that having many well-known buildings.

  1. Annie Lye says:

Appreciate your attempt at elucidating the differences between “exorbitant” and “generic” city, especially by bringing in your accrued knowledge of seeing the city on screen through this course. The “sameness” that you mention is a good starting point in understanding the complex make-ups to what Abbas defines as a “generic city.” One way of thinking about this also is to examine them in the context of Hong Kong or a city you are familiar with. Think about what aspects of your chosen city are considered either generic or exorbitant, or both!
