[Reading response: Ackbar Abbas]

Disappearance seemed a grim subject. Yet when development is taking place, cultural disappearance is somehow inevitable. Talking about preservation, it is true that old architecture is the image of history and visual consumption when people visit the place.  Given that Hong Kong may not have an indigenous culture, it is a considerable challenge to decide what to keep. What we want to preserve should be the collective memories and human emotions, rather than the visual and spatial dimension of the occurrence of an incident, perhaps selectively preserving those glamour and honour. Though the architecture may be useful in acting as a reminder, the building may not be effective in provoking emotion. Films may be better tools in keeping collective memories by providing context and emotion to the place rather than just a visual image of a building. Films fill people with nostalgia and make it easily accessible and reexperienced as well.
