[READING RESPONSE] C. Seng, E. (2021). Cuts through Hong Kong.

The film “In the Mood of Love” captures the cityscapes of Hong Kong in the 2000s. The film features different shots of bedrooms, hallways, corridors and streets. During the production of the film, quite a few of the establishments that are originally planned for use for sets are no longer there so the team searched for alternatives, one being a hotel in Bangkok.

It is interesting to note that even if they’re two different places (Hong Kong and Bangkok), the architecture is similar to the point that the sets in Bangkok can be substituted for that in Hong Kong. The film also highlights how the architecture and establishments in Hong Kong or any other place for that matter is ever changing and what we see now may not be there in the next decade, so films in this instance not only has an artistic purpose of translating the artistic vision of the director but also serves as a documentary of how Hong Kong looked like in the past.

I appreciate your writing about Eunice’s text, Cuts through Hong Kong. The first paragraph seems to be a summary of Eunice’s text, which it should be a response. There are 2 points which you can focus on: 1/ you talk about bedrooms, hallways, corridors and streets, what does the film want to show about the Hong Kong’s domestic space and how is your response/reflection/experience with those spaces?, 2/ you mention that the architecture in Hong Kong and Bangkok are similar, why they are similar and what it shows about the global implication at that time.
