[Reading Response] – Spatial Stories

De Certeau defined place and space by “Space is a practiced place” as space is what ones take more consideration into place. According to this definition, the “difference of tour and map “ and “boundaries” walked by De Certeau following can be easily understand.

In an one-sided angle, those ideas can be understanded by “things are different according to their observer”. Place is neutral. Space is different to place since it has an “observer”. Streets become different space to walkers in city as they link to walkers’ life and memory. And since those walkers’ life and memory are different. Space is different to everyone too. Hence it leads to the concept of map and boundaries. Map is neutral since it was still marks and symbols on papers because it is talking about truth: What the world(place) is like. However, tour is more about people, like hand writing of a traveler or a guide to tourist. And more on it, affected by the people, tour is “active” and “dominate”. It contains the idea of writer and sounds “different” so it is more like a person and familiar to reader. Lastly, boundaries showing more “observer’s feeling”, according to people’s needs, a place is cut into many specialized space or either violently separate the earth into different countries. Actually, Space and place are words created by people. They can have special meaning to everyone. Just like everyone’s sight is different. So the world can be interpreted in different ways.

I appreciate your writing about spatial stories. Your text is not a response but rather a summary. You should use De Certeau’s idea of space and place to reflect on your everyday experience. How De Certeau’s idea helps you to understand your experience of space, place, map, tour, and boundaries in the urban setting. You always can provide some examples in your everyday life.
