[Reading Response: Carl Abbott]

This reading has caught my attention as the author predicted realistically about the future cities. ‘Distributed cities’, which was formed by the airships, was one of the cities that I felt it was interesting. This is because the concept of city moving around with airships was unique and fresh. I have seen people living their lives in the airships through many of the Sci-fi movies but never thought about this seriously. However, after reading this article, I have started to think about the possibility that these ‘distributed cities’ could become our future cities.

I believe there is a high possibility for us to live in a ‘distributed city’ in the future since technology is rapidly developing nowadays.

In this reading, the author has also concerned about whether the rapid development of technology will help the world or damage the world. Like ‘distributed cities’, I think rapid development of technology will make the world better but damage it at the same time. For example, we would be able to travel longer distances in shorter time but might lose humanity in the future if we are living in a ‘distributed city’.

It is interesting that you think the sci-fi’s prediction of the future is realistic. What is realized is always partly true about fiction and partly not. For instance, the world did not evolve to become the one portrayed in Blade Runner/ Matrix…etc. In this case, it would be crucial for you to define what is ‘realistic’. Other than imagining the possibility to live in a ‘distributed city’ in the future, would it be more intriguing to understand/juxtapose such futuristic concepts with our real-world/real-time situation? For instance, the distributed city is already occurring in areas like Pearl River Delta/ Greater Bay Area.
