Reading Response: Carl Abbott

Part of the beauty of sci-fi story is the imagination beyond reality. It is always fascinating for us- human who is trapped in this 3 dimension space and 1 dimension of time, experiencing nothing new under the sun. Abbott has showcased vividly some of the imaginary cities in his passage, and got us rethink the reality.

I personally find the migratory city an enlightening example. In recent years, with the soaring number of people around the globe not satisfied with their government, the issue of migration has hogged the limelight. Alongside this phenomenon are the moral/ philosophical discussions of whether people should ‘rebuild’ their ‘homeland’ in another country and retain their own culture; What actually are the differences of nationality, citizenship; and race or ethnicity? Some similar concept could be applied to the moving city for a more in depth discussion, which were also introduced in the tutorial.

Sci-fi story for me is about rethink and shape a better future.

I enjoy how you relate sci-fi fictional cities to real-life phenomena. I would like to know how you personally think about rebuilding a city in another location. Will you be willing to live in that city/ migratory city? Your point of view matters!
