Reading Response: Cheung, E. M. K.

There is a long tradition of portraying Hong Kong as a ghostly city in Hong Kong films. Horror movies mostly create anxiety and fear through sight and sound, so as to bring excitement to the audience. And Hong Kong horror films, a large part is based on the political situation and cultural background of Hong Kong. Many also suffered from the encroachment of capitalism as a result of years of British colonial hegemony. Therefore, when Hong Kong returned to China, there were many voices against the Chinese government, which resulted in the birth of many ghost films at that time.

At the same time, the architecture of Hong Kong is also a big reason for the birth of ghost films. In addition to its bustling skyscrapers, Hong Kong also has many practical problems in less noticed places. They are low cost public housing and old community in Hong Kong. In these places it is dark and miserable both indoors and out. Therefore, many directors choose to show this situation to the audience in the way of film.

  1. Yin Chun Gilbert says:

Appreciate your attempt in contextualizing HK’s films of the ghosts to the city’s political and social problems. But your elaboration to link up the subjects is not sufficient. For example, you need to further explain why would the political situation and the cultural background nurture the ghostly films in HK?
