Reading Response: Michel de Certeau

The excerpt focuses on the philosophical views on space, which are inspiring and quite different from our thoughts.

To many of us, place and space are similar in that they refer to an area, but it is not true. A place is a stable arrangement of objects. Space refers to a place with activities. For instance, there are trees, swings, and slides in a park, which is a place in objective perception. Once, we have experience in the park, then the park is a space for us because we have different perceptions of a place.

Tours and space are similar in that they are both associated with history. Maps only point out the paths for finding out the locations while tours can show steps of a journey. However, tours were once connected to maps because pictures and outlines, which form the journey, were printed on the maps at that time.

This reads merely a summary of de Certeau’s definitions of “place”, “space”, “maps”, and “tours”. It will greatly benefit if you can quote the text to demonstrate your understanding. You may strengthen your reading by delving a little deeper – what did de Certeau meant by “A place (lieu) is the order (of whatever kind) in accord with which elements are distributed in relationships of coexistence.” and “A space exists when one takes into consideration vectors of direction, velocities, and time variables” (de Certeau 1984, 117)? What is the relationship between places, places and bodily movements with regards to his example on “maps” and “tours”. As this is a reading response, what is your response to these concepts?
