Reading Response: Nezar AlSayyad

AlSayyad’s text described the city from the viewpoint of voyeur. It explained how one can look at the city within certain frames. AlSayyad explained an expanding scale and level of voyeur in viewing the outside world. Starting from peeping through window to surveillance camera inside building then state-wide surveillance system. The text led to a few reflections about todays’ world. First, in the examples mentioned, female is usually under controlled by men that reflect the gender role in the society is imbalance. Secondly, truth is questioned as we rely a lot on technology especially the surveillance camera. Technology allowed us to look at the world virtually, but it can also alter the reality easily. Images and videos shown to us are recognized as the truth and reality, but it should not be overlooked that images and videos can be edited easily. Despite public can access to a lot of photos and videos online, the real “voyeur” never changed. It is always people with high authority control what is shown and what is censored. Therefore, it worth discussing whether the virtual world we are viewing online is real or virtual.

Good discussion on technology’s distortion of reality. With regard to your last point, as technology further advances, many people are able to install CCTV systems, some even hack into the CCTV systems of others. What do you think of the expanding trend that more and more people are able to become voyeurs in this way?
