[Reading Response] : NOIRS: The City, the Woman and Other Spaces

The reading is called NOIRS: The City, the Woman and Other Spaces. In this article, it mentioned two movies from 1960-1970. One of them is called Black Rose (Hak Mui Gwai) which was produced in 1965. The story is talk about a pair of sister who name themselves as “black rose” or Hak Mui Gwai in Cantonese. Their mission is to steal some valuable stuff like jewelry or money from the rich. Also, they will use it to help the poor. This film kind of talking about the economic inequality in the 1960s in Hong Kong. It shows the difference in the lives between the rich and the poor or the working class. It presents the dual worlds of the upper class and the lower class in the 1960s Hong Kong society. Also the sisters present as beautiful, physically skilled, and intelligent women. It symbolizes how hard work can the poor change from the working class to the upper class.

Another movie is Elevator Girl (Din Tai Neui Long). It is also released in 1965. The main character is a young working-class woman whose job is to take passengers up and down the commercial and office building in the elevator. Therefore, she can see what is inside the building and know what did upper class did. The film highlights the emergence of the middle class and the aspirations of the lower working class toward upward mobility in 1960s Hong Kong.
