Reading Response: Roland Barthes

After reading the article, I would like to watch more films in the cinema. The feeling that enjoying a film inside the cinema suddenly come up to my mind during my reading. I really understand that what is the “Hypnosis” that Barthes said. Rendered by the light and sound from the film in the cinema, I can easily be hypnotized that “I am the main character.” When the hypnosis, I can just put down myself and enjoy being another one.

Regrettably, I have already forgotten that feeling. Maybe I am not as free as a child just go and watch the film that I like. And I am already used to watch films through YouTube or Netflix. However, watching films in my own place, I feel like missing something. And it let me cannot addict to any film. I have brought a projector and speaker set trying to simulate the cinema, but it is really not the same.

I am sure that I will go to the cinema and recall that feeling after the epidemic.

It is interesting that you have tried to simulate the atmosphere of the cinema and look for ‘hypnosis’. Why do you enjoy being hypnotised? Did Barthes have the same enjoyment? I wonder how you would respond to the second part of his text – how to ‘take off’, and relate to your experience in watching movies in a cinema.
