Reading Response: Roland Barthes

Reading this text has given me another set of perception on films I have never thought of, which is deeming films as another form of hypnosis. Every time I watch a film and come out of the cinema, I feel like I had stopped in time and had left reality for a bit. After reading this text, I finally realized what made me feel this way; it was the atmosphere the cinema creates when watching a film. As I am placed in a confined room with barely any lights except from the screen, I am automatically glued to film and have no other thought but of the film itself. I agree with Roland where he explains that we can conceive film as merely art if we critically analyze it as I have often found myself being aware of my surroundings and watching a film as I begin to analyze it.

I enjoy how you relate your own cinematic experience with Barthes’ piece and am glad that it has sparked you. To further enrich the reflection, you should critically elaborate what you mean by ‘merely art’ by referring to Barthes’ piece. How did Barthes describe film? I believe he thought it resembles more as ‘image-repertoire’. Why did Barthes advocate that we should critically analyse a film instead of being glued to it? Do you agree that we should keep a critical distance from film?
