[READING RESPONSE] Roland Barthes

In “Leaving the Movie Theatre”, Barthes explains various elements that construct the space of cinema, such as the dark and silent environment, the comfortable seats and the movie screen, which provide a unique sensation to audiences in the cinema. In other words, different individuals have their own considerations in the specific element of the cinema space. For example, some individuals enjoy the high quality of Dolby Audio provided by the cinema the most as it enables them to listen to intricate details of the soundtrack and immerse themselves in the film viewing experience.

In my experience, other cinema audiences affect me the most. Once, a bald man was sitting in front of me. As the movie played, his head reflected the light from the cinema screen onto me, which affected my enjoyment of the film. This is related to the “two bodies” mentioned by Barthes. He emphasized that when individuals watch a movie in the cinema, they will focus and integrate into the film due to the spatial element. Owing to this, individuals feel like they have a second body. Hence, I would like to say, “The charm of the space is in the cinema. Let’s feel and enjoy it!”.

I appreciate your beautiful analysis of Barthes’ article, as well as your funny experience that vividly demonstrates the key idea of “two bodies.” I would suggest you dig your reflection deeper based on the title “Leaving the Movie Theater”, especially the term “leave.” Also, I am looking forward to hearing more about how you situate yourselves and dispose the situation of “two bodies” during watching films in the theater. Keeping rational, falling into the cinematic ideological world or other ways?
