This reading response is regarding the connection between film and culture, film lifestyle, and differences between Chinese and Hollywood films.
Firstly, film and city culture are interconnected. Shanghai film (e.g. The Bund (2010)) depicts Bund’s prosperity, consisting of British colonial buildings, foreign concessions, modern hotels…… Gradually, the bund becomes the cultural symbol of Shanghai, it symbolizes the flourishing, highly developing and history of Shanghai. As a Shanghai people, I can observe that until this age, the bund has always been one of the must-see sites for tourists. Therefore, cultures can be disseminated through films.

Secondly, the film gradually became the lifestyle of the Chinese. Many prestigious writers, such as LuXun, XuZhi, LiuNa…. like watching films and narrating movies or cinema in their books, which affects Chinese readers yearn for movies. Before watching a film, citizens may select their favorable film regarding the celebrity’s ability and reputation, they may also buy some snacks or newspapers. Some may bring their partner…… So watching a film becomes a leisure activity and a comfortable lifestyle even for poor people.
Lastly, the difference in diegetic effect between Chinese films and Hollywood films is because of the heterogeneity of culture. Hollywood style is more “immersive”, which usually puts the audience’s gaze at the ideal vantage point within narrative space. However, Chinese style (long-take, deep-focus)is onlooking since it gives a prominent role to space itself. That’s why they has different movie style.
