[Video essay] Fairness

Floor plan

The epidemic situation of COVID19 from Wuhan affected the global economy, political situation and health conditions, it caused many deaths in five months.

This story happens in an animal city in 2021.The story is about a senior police officer (the little sheep) infected the unknown disease at home. Through the experience of COVID 19, it thought that it knew how to prevent disease infection. So it ordered a lot of masks and handrubs to protect itself. Finally it infects as it does not know how the virus transmits. It thinks that it is unbelievable because it is a senior police, it is rich and it has power. The story brings out the message about the fairness of disease. Everyone has a risk of getting infected. The risk will not decrease because someone is rich and powerful.

At the beginning, the little sheep is listening to the news report. The news is talking about the new unknown disease discovered a few days ago and caused death. When it is going to report the details of the disease, the little sheep switches off the video, because it thinks that it knows what to do to prevent disease after experiencing the serious epidemic situation of COVID19. After that, it calls the secretary and orders it to finish the work and to deliver lunch for it, as it starts to isolate itself from the crowd. Then, it orders a large number of face masks and alcohol based handrub. It eats the contaminated burger,  and then not feeling well two hours later. Therefore, it uses the thermometer to check its body temperature. The thermometer always shows 37 degree Celsius, just like the thermometers which are products from China. The little sheep calls it’s butler (elephant) and sends it to the emergency department. The little sheep felt shock when it found that it infected the unknown disease that may cause death. It thinks that it will not get infected as it has power and money which may help it to leave the epidemic area.

During the COVID19 situation, everyone wants to leave the epidemic area. They leave because they do not want to get infected. Some of the exchange students and foreign workers wanted to go back home. The air ticket was extremely expensive as the airline declined and canceled. This phenomenon seems to show that people can leave if they have money. However, a number of people still get infected unfortunately. On the other hand, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, also infected COVID19. This shows that no matter what you are, where you come from, rich or poor, have power or not, all of us have a chance to get infected from the disease.

Fairness

News:

The Department of Health reported two new cases of unknown disease overnight, including the state’s 17th virus-related death.

News: Director of health said the virus transmission…

Again…I know how to deal with it.

Hello, it’s me. I will not go to the office today, just finish the report.

I’m the team leader, you are not. This is an order!

By the way, prepare a thermometer and deliver some food for me.

30 minutes later

(Knock knock)

Butler: Sir, your food is ready.

Okay…let’s order some masks and alcohol based handrub.

Butler: Sir, please take your thermometer.

2 hours later

Oh…I’m not feeling well. Let me check the body temperature…

37 degrees Celsius…

Hello, please send me to the hospital…

Bibu sound

Emergency department

Hey, can you hear me?

Yes.

You have presented clinical symptoms fulfilling the criteria of the unknown disease infection.

The unknown viruses can be transmitted via contaminated food.

Your specimens had been tested positive.

Why…I’m rich and powerful, why I’m still infected…

Before the epidemic, everyone is equal, that is, everyone has the opportunity to contract the virus.

  1. Annie Lye says:

Appreciate your creative approach to the allegorical narrative, this is a promising start. The allegorical nature is clear, however, the nature of commentary here affects the entire production. The issue here is regarding the video content as well as text. The way you presented misinformed “facts” and “news” is problematic. The research needs to be more thoroughly done and avoid using misleading prompts that over-generalize the situation. Perhaps this could have been a more satirical piece that allows viewers different insights into the various infected stakeholders (e.g. race and issue are not discussed) impacted by COVID19.

Specifically on the topic of “fairness,” upon further research, you will see that many factors – such as class divide, income inequality, racial groups, areas of living, etc. – does impact the way people contract and recover from COVID19. To develop your examination on whether “fairness exists for all,” it is worth exploring both obvious factors (e.g. residents crammed into small rooms) and less visible ones – for example, questioning whether a community has access to medical treatment and whether they are able to afford it. At university, the level of research is expected to be intense and wide-ranging, analysis to be in-depth, and references to be noted with accuracy.
