[Video Essay] Information city

Statement: Dormitory is the miniature to show Hong Kong is a information city.

Introduction: The video shows the simple life of two roommates in the dormitory during pandemic. The things happened inside the dormitory show that Hong Kong is a information city, looking into the daily life.

The whole video talks about two roommates have conflicts during covid-19 and then be reconciled. The video shows they using TV, computer and phone to gain the information of the city and things related to the COVID-19.

Reason for me decided to use animation to make the video is that I’m not living in it. Therefore, there is a problem for me to think about what would the life be in the dormitory during COVID-19. I try to ask my classmates their life in the dormitory. The sound of video shows the behavior and feeling of the two roommates. And the scenes are as follow.

Storyboard:

1st scene: The news shows the situation of COVID-19

2nd scene: A and B discuss about the prevention method of the COVID-19

3rd scene: A use alcohol for disinfection and clean the room

4th scene: B want to go party, A urge B not to do it

5th scene: B found the place she went to has confirmed case (through computer) and feel scared

6th scene: A encourage B to take the COVID-19 test

7th scene: they wait for the result of the test

8th scene: the result of the test shown by the phone

Objectives and reflection

The video essay gave a chance for me to re-observe the city and the function of different architectures. It also let me to look the city in different angles. I think dormitory is the miniature to show Hong Kong as a information city. During COVID-19 pandemic, people always stay in one place, like home or dormitory. However, this do not reduce their connection between themselves and the city, attributed by the place they stayed. They can gain information in different ways.

The design of each scene is very detailed, and the animation production is smooth and mature. The dubbing of the animation is very suitable and vivid. For example, the sound of sweeping the floor and drinking water make me feel immersive. The author’s intention can be seen from the layout of the plot and the conception of the content.
But the downside is that there is a lot of time in the video without any sound, which can easily cause the audience to be distracted. Moreover, when A and B are consulting the website, the fonts of the pages are small and dense, making it difficult to read carefully, and there may be audiences who cannot understand what the director wants to express.
At the same time, the theme of the video is information city, but in the first half of the video, it seems that the director is introducing covid-19 rather than expressing Hong Kong as a city full of information. Therefore, it is easy to blur the subject of the video or cause misunderstandings by the audience.

It is such a creative way of using comic-like drawings to narrate your story. However, it is not quite clear to me as to which way has the dormitory performed as a miniature of the information city?

Aside from the limitations in establishing your arguments on the video, you might as well utilise the text (as in this blog post) as both a short expository and reflective essay of your arguments. You could describe your train of thoughts and let your audience grasp your logic. To do so, you might want to take a closer look at articles, journals, papers, or books. These kinds of material would help you tremendously in building both your narrative and argument. Therefore, they would help to elevate your writing quality.
