Although the book title is walking in the city, I think the idea of the book is more focused on the relationship between space and humans. In the very beginning author using the top view to describe the city , he is using the pedestrian behavior to tell me that they should have some unexpected behavior acting in the city the book cite the Charlie Chaplin idea of describing cane to support the idea ‘he does other things with the same thing and the goes beyond the limits that the determinants of the object set on its utilization’ I feels like the way I think about how the city work is limited, the city diversification more than what I expected.
It recalls my memory of changing the thought of the role of university. In the very beginning, I thought university is a sacred place for study, the most thing reflect this idea is my first high table dinner. This is my first time dressing formally to participate in a dinner, it makes me feel like I don’t belong here. However, with more days of study I released that university is not just a sacred place, I find the ‘human firework’ which in Chinese it can mean hustle and bustle and you can feel warm from it. I find that people in university are not holy spirits, but a group of enthusiastic people which will answer my question patiently. I think this is sort of what Charlie Chapin`s ‘cane’ which the original purpose of university is to let student learn some professional skills, right now I learn more than that (e.g. how I think, how I talk, etc.). The university is the space, I am the walker.
