Field Trip 2: Escalators in Central

  1. Framing

Looking at a segment of the hectic world from the alley.

2. Cropping

Cut the city in 2 parts.

3. Camera is static, Subject is dynamic

What are you doing?

4. Camera is placed in an unexpected location

Part of the money factory.

5. Differentiation of speeds

Residual restaurant. Walk and stop.

The prominent escalator cuts through Central from the coast to mid-levels. Everyone travelling on the track enjoys the panning view high above the streets. However, the effect of the escalator is way more than that. Squeezing the infrastructure into city blocks redefined the urban porosity of the district. It brings residual spaces as well as concealed areas to the site. Due to the narrow volume and hidden nature, people can easily privatise public spaces which creates a complexed threshold between private and public. Moreover, it creates communal spaces for people to stay, adding more functions to the public circulation. Such urban dynamics interest me a lot.

Your framed and cropped shots are strong. I wonder if your journey should be more focused on one specific lens, such as occupation/use of communal areas, i.e. smoking, resting, etc. Well crafted; careful with the typo’s in your titles though.
