[Field-Homework 1] Stay at home

Space: Room

Camera Location: In-between

  • Part I
  1. Wide-angle: By using a wide-angle, I showed a high-density population of the city in a limited view, trying to express the high risk of virus widely spread.
  2. Zoom: My camera got closer to tell a story of two “persons wearing a mask,” which must be the normality of everyone these days.
  3. Focus: I put the focus on the alcohol cotton prepared for every disinfection back from outside.
  4. Crop: By cutting the original picture, I only left this mask in the sunshine for disinfection.
  5. Bird’s eye: A high enough perspective gives me a large view and more insight into the city

  1. Worm’s eye: From a low angle, I captured how medicinal powder is poured in the glass cup.
  2. First-person view: Every time I want to go out, I need to apply for permission. Using the first-person view, I told this story in my picture.
  3. Skewed angle: I find an angle from the washing machine to portrait clothes disinfection procedures.
  4. Perspective: Perspective structure makes space stand out from 2-dimension, gives a more positive visual impact.
  5. View frame: Through my glasses, the HKU website page shows schools teach online during this special period. The glasses serve as a view frame to call attention to central items.
  6. Chiaroscuro: Light goes through a thick curtain and shines on the specially prepared bedsheet, which forms a strong contrast between shadow and light.
  7. Seriality: This seriality shows the procedure of washing hands and makes pictures more dynamic.
  • Part II

It is a picture shot from the aerial angle. This angle gives pictures of the power of containing large enough city space and offers more insight into the city. By using this technique, the virus’s widespread and influence on everyone is conveyed. This picture describes public and private spaces. Since the virus is spreading, public activities are almost forbidden. People are encouraged to stay at home. Looking outside from inside, we found the city showing an unusual desolation of the public space: on the road, only one or two cars pass by, and almost shops and restaurants shut down.

You demonstrate a good understanding of and personal engagement with the course content with regard to the task. You offer some insightful reflections in your daily routine. However, the 5. Bird’s eye view and 6. Worm’s eye view are not quite correct. The former refers to the view from above, like a google earth view (Literally a bird’s view when in flight in the sky). The latter refers to a view directly from below – literally what a worm sees when it looks up.
For 8. Skewed angle, we love your choice of subject matter, from inside your washing machine, but it is not quite a skewed angle, as we are looking at you frontally. You can find many examples online or check the references we have put up.
    10. View frame – “The glasses serve as a view frame to call attention to central items.” – is technically well-executed and visually smart. You may wish to consider taking this theme into later projects in the course.
Part II is well-written, a little regretful that the image is not a bird’s eye though your text description is still relevant. Public and private spaces will certainly be more visible in a bird’s eye view (think google earth view showing the city’s spaces).
