[Field-Homework 2] UNDERGROUND MALADY

[Dual view, Central Frame] The use of the dual view emphasizes the handrail at the centre, showing the non-contact of the people and the handrail during virus peak periods, the fear of having a direct association with the contagious coronavirus. Showing a metaphor of the Mong Kok MTR exit entrance, chewing contagions into its body, throwing up digested contagions outwards. This is a prove of how epidemical the underground is with a mass rush in of population in mainstream stations, especially stations with the exchange of transportation lines. The churning of disease inside the underground, it’s suffering…

[Time Lapse, Central Frame] The rush hour, rush rush, escape from the underground disease!

[Cropping, Central Frame] Happy on your phone, NO MASK, large luggage, small worker chats, miserable times…silence when life is miserable.

[Framing] A framed empty MTR cart and a cleaning lady, swiping once on every contagion on the handrails.

[Track] Masks, masks, contagions, laned behind platforms, ready to enter.

Fantastic set of videos that demonstrate your keen, journalistic-eye of framing familiar subjects in creative ways that heighten our awareness of issues that were perhaps formerly unforeseen. The timelapse was particularly intriguing because the most fascinating focus were not the passengers, but instead the MTR employees cleaning dutifully. Another one worth mentioning is the cropped frame video of passengers, which draw strong attention to individual moments of their private thoughts and emotions. Great metaphor of the underground as an active body that “chews” and “throws up” infectious particles (us humans!). Could you indicate exactly which MTR station each video was shot in?
