[Field-Homework 3] Hybrid City

Hybrid City

Hong Kong, a hybrid city, has long been known for its diversity. The University of Hong Kong, as a representative place of Hong Kong, demonstrates this characteristic. The short essay and video will focus on the Chong yuet Ming Building on campus and explain the “hybrid” feature. The importance of the Chong Yuet Ming Building as a building connecting the main campus to the Chong Yuet Ming Chemistry Building is self-evident. it is a modernist building located on a sloping hillside. At the entrance below the hillside are lush trees and lotus ponds. At the exit of the building is the famous Yuet Ming Fountain and teaching building of the University of Hong Kong.  At the same time, its asymmetrical interior structure, with only the elevator up the stairs and no elevator down the unique design, has always been talked about. Due to the unique design of the building, coupled with some of the rumors surrounding the donors of the building during construction. Since then, some people have reported strange things happening inside the building. This allowed many ghost stories to spring up and gave the building a sense of mystery. The video will start with the scenery of Chong Yuet Ming Building at night, and tell the different appearance of Chong Yuet Ming Building day and night from the first-person perspective. At the same time, the difference between the building and the surrounding buildings, as well as the degree of integration with the surrounding landscape, reflects the “hybrid” characteristics.

To better discover the features of the Chong Yuet Ming Building, after a careful investigation on the spot, I found that the traditional architectural style was different from other buildings nearby. Chong Yuet Ming Building does not have a complex and gorgeous interior design. On the contrary, its interior decoration is very simple and emphasizes the use of space. At the same time, the design of the building is simple but aesthetic through the use of simple lines. At the beginning of the video, the lights flicker in the dim light, a common element in horror films. The biggest advantage of this kind of picture is that while rendering the tense and scary atmosphere, it can quickly seize the audience’s attention and give the audience a feeling of being in the scene to more easily arouse their emotions. Then, I shot a first-person entry into a door that opened automatically. As a tuple frequently used in various visual arts, the door frame has the function of attracting the viewer’s eye and emphasizing the contents of the frame. The frame is like a rectangular barrier, a separator, which shields and separates the two Spaces inside and outside the scene. Give the audience a sense of entering a new space. So is the next scene, except that it’s a long shot. Compared with the short shot, the advantage of it is that the audience can see a scene unfolding without any visual interruption will also make them more willing to watch. In addition, when shooting the scene of getting on the elevator, I chose to first close the lens to the escalator and block it as the picture. Then the camera slowly rises with the escalator to reveal the vast space. Then I pointed the telephoto lens in the distance to highlight the interior of the building by using the depth of field. For the daytime scene, I chose to start with the Yuet Ming Fountain on the upper floor of the Chong Yuet Ming Building. First, I take a close-up of Fountain, then gradually zoom out to create a wide stretch while keeping the main body unchanged. At the same time, it can also show the architectural shape behind the fountain, which is in contrast with the Chong Yuet Ming Building next to it, reflecting the hybrid of architecture.   For the rest of the video, we’re going to use the same techniques that we’ve used most in this video. First, the lens gives a close-up of a specific object, such as the ground or wall, and then shows the audience a wider picture by moving or rising the lens. The image focuses on showing how well the building blends into the surrounding greenery. At the same time, it reflects the hybrid of modern architecture and nature. The video ends with a student walking up an escalator and looking down the inside of the building, where various people walk by. During the day, Chong Yuet Ming building is crowded with people, and the strange night is completely different. It reflects two very different characteristics of Hong Kong, the hustle and quiet. At the same time, Hong Kong is a city full of ghost stories, but that doesn’t stop it from being a vibrant place. Just because of these characteristics, Hong Kong has become a hybrid city, and it is the reason why it is so fascinating.
