Field Trip 1 : Rooftops

Wide-angle

Shooting an overall view of a certain part of the city.

Zoom

Taking only part of the building, showing a kind of illusion of modernization from the reflection of a high rise building from the glass of another.

Focus

Focusing on the tube to show the residents’ trace of life.

Crop

Only showing half of the two high-rise buildings to emphasize the old building between them to show the contrast.

Bird’s eye / aerial

Shooting from the rooftop to show the construction of the block.

Worm’s eye

Looking up from a lower position to exaggerate the height of the building and the feeling of modernization.

First person view

Showing the sense of reality on the road and make the viewers a sense of participation.

Skewed angle

Using a skewed angle to show the ruins on the rooftop, emphasize the sense of disarray.

Perspective

The handrail is shot in a two-point perspective to show the order in an environment of disorder.

View frame

Using tubes, walls of different colors and the window to form several frames.

Seriality

Shooting several photos at the same position to show the change of the time.

Chiaroscuro / contrast

Using black and white, light and dark color to construct the scene. The handrail, the chair and part of the concrete are in dark color, and the stair, other parts of the ground is colored in white. The sharp contrast makes the picture more dramatic. Besides, the black little chair is so far away from the camera, showing a sense of loneliness and just like a kind of escaping from the world. The different color of the ground is made casually and indeliberately, but full of tension and expressiveness.

  1. Kenrick says:

Very nice Chiaroscuro / Contrast at the concrete flooring surface! Good observation about the trace of life of people through capturing little markings. I can see the dystopian feeling and tension in the skewed angle. In the next exercise, you can try to focus on 1-2 methods / styles / subjects that interests you, to make your set of work stronger.
