Reading Response: Darrell William Davis

This article has discussed a lot about the relationship between technology and ethnicity in films. The writer has used the film Blade Runner to discuss the relationship between humans and replicants. If replicants have self-consciousness and faith, can we regard them as humans? I think cyberpunk stories always attract me because they are inspiring. They show conflicts that might happen when there is high technology but a low quality of life. Also, the architectures in this kind of film are very amusing because they are usually high-tech such as a smart home.

The writer also describes Hong Kong as an information city and a perfect background for Ghost in the Shell. In many people’s impression, the signatures of Hong Kong are signs, skyscrapers, and Victoria Harbor. The director of Ghost in the Shell thought these elements of Hong Kong would provide the perfect setting for the film meets the theme of the power and influence of computers. The images of Hong Kong in other movies are always ‘old’ because they want to present the image of Hong Kong in the late 20th century. I am surprised that Ghost in the Shell presents Hong Kong in a such way.

I appreciate that you picked out specific points from Davis’ reading and responded to them with your own ideas. Perhaps you can further elaborate on what you find surprising about the presentation of Hong Kong in Ghost in the Shell. Also, what is an example of a cyberpunk film which has inspired you?
