[Reading Response] Jennifer Yoos and Vincent James

This text provides me some new angle of the development of pedestrian system, it is not only a matter of politics but also a matter of social science, economics and politics. The doubling or tripling of the streets helps with the flow of people, segregation of people and transportations. As branches of a building, pedestrian system expands the sphere of buildings, and connects them, promoting the growth of economy.

Frequently seen in Hong Kong, such pedestrian skyways are a unique symbol. A way to view the city by walking inside it not on the ground but in the air. In many movies, skyways are indispensable, they show the long distance between two sites, and are perfect for chasing scenes. What’s more, the separation and connection of buildings which we simply consider as sites, helps as metaphor of the distance between protagonists and express a feeling of sorrow.

  1. Putri Santoso says:

A good summary of Yoos and James’ article on “the other side” of elevated pedestrian walkways. Reflecting upon how these aspects influence the economy by giving examples, especially from your own perspective or your own experience, would be worthwhile. In addition, you mentioned how the skyways are indispensable in the second paragraph. You could also build up your argument by relating it to your previous paragraph.
