[Reading Response: Jennifer Yoos and Vincent James]

When I first read about the pedestrian systems in “The Multilevel Metropolis”, I was able to think of Hong Kong’s advanced infrastructure immediately. Just like the picture shown in this reading, Hong Kong is a well-known city for its numerous footbridges, skyways, and escalators on the streets. Whenever I walk down the streets of Hong Kong, I have always questioned myself about the development of pedestrian systems and their advantages. After reading this article, I was able to answer these questions with a better understanding of multilevel pedestrian systems. According to the points that Jennifer and Vincent mentioned, Hong Kong has employed “on-demand planning” to develop pedestrian systems and therefore respond to the changing circumstances. Through this development, the pedestrian systems have created a lot of advantages in people’s lives; it allows people to walk safely, conveniently, and comfortably in a short amount of time.

  1. Jen Lam says:

Apart from providing more convenience, how have the footbridge systems changed the understanding and practice of space in Hong Kong? Have footbridges replaced the streets? What are their differences? Multilevel metropolis means that another layer of the city has been created due to the building of footbridges systems. Sometimes an infrastructure is built merely for increasing accessibility but in the end, it inadvertently changes the city space a lot.
