Reading Response: Ronald Barthes

In “Leaving the Movie Theater”, the way Roland Barthes describe the sensation to leave a movie theater makes me realize that what affects the enjoyment of watching a movie is not limited to the movie itself, and not only the sensation of leaving the theater, but to the experience from going to the movie theater, watching the movie, and leaving the theater. There are many other external factors that can improve or affect our attention to the movie. Being in the movie theater allows us to fully immerse ourselves and our senses to the movie. The darkness, temperature, and sound system makes us able to fully feel the movie. However, I have to disagree with Roland Barthes that the experience in the movie theater can be better than the movie itself. I think the movie itself is the most important thing in the experience. As my main focus will be towards the movie, no matter how extraordinary is the movie theater, if the movie itself is not good, I would not be able to enjoy it.

Good summary of the readings and has demonstrated your ability to conceptualize critical ideas. Appreciate your courage to disagree with the author but you have to provide more explanation on how / why the movie itself is more important, e.g., elaborating how movie is the driving incentive to attract people to the theatre and so it is of a higher priority?
