—-In Search of the Ghostly in Context

This paragraph emphasizes the significance of exploring the intersection between urban space and social marginality in Hong Kong films, especially those that focus on the experiences of the socially marginalized classes. The author notices that while middle-class issues have been the primary focus of critical discourses on Hong Kong films, Chan’s films stand out for their exploration of the experiences of those who have been marginalized within society. The author also highlights the importance of developing new strategies for reading these films, specifically by examining the surreal and ghostly elements that are often present in Chan’s work. By doing so, the author suggests that it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between urban space and social marginality in Hong Kong.

The urbanization has caused not only development, but also problems, particularly for the common public. The living space has been contracted because the urban construction and people get more and more dense. The private space becomes valuable for the working class. However, the short of social resources makes it difficult for them to fight for their rights. They are always ignored in the instant development. Maybe one day, the direction of future can be switched. We don’t have to focus on the minority, but we need to provide more care to them.
