Field Homework 3 – Empty R

MTR (Empty R) Presentation: https://youtu.be/E4x1R9I_1E4 Synopsis: A journey that is familiar to viewers is shown depicted in the story, a journey from the protagonist’s home to the MTR station. He was alone all the way and the encountered environment is abnormally empty and quite, that the “creak creak creak” sound from the escalator is over powering any voice. Following his journey going through the empty entrance, platform and carriage, they seem larger than usual without other passengers filling the space. Chasing after the wind, the MTR arrives, and a man in blue mask is all that caught his attention. Looking

[Field Homework 3] The Long Way Home

This documentary records the long routine of avoiding virus to be brought home. Starting from the moment one steps into the building, one becomes fully aware not to bring any virus home. The lengthy procedure is basically disinfecting everything as much as possible and avoiding contact. The split-screen shows a comparison between the two routines of arriving home before and during the pandemic outbreak. The added cleansing procedures in the short arrival finally allows one to sit comfortably on the sofa.     References: De Certeau, M. (1984). Spatial Stories. The unfamiliar tranquility in the bustling urban space seems to be unreal, though more than enough evidence proves a cheerless city. People gradually realize that a bustling town with noise and traffic jam is how a city’s energy, excitement and liveliness are

[Field-Homework 3] HONGKONGUNDER-COVID-1920

Coronavirus, an uninvited guest, has changed our daily life in the past two months. We spent most of the time in our home. Having online lectures, watching TV programmes and observing the pedestrian with masks become part of our daily life. Besides, the cityscape of Hong Kong changed under the hygiene crisis. MTR stations underground are filled with passengers wearing masks while most of the street stores were closed under the poor economic atmosphere. The escalator system packed with crowds commuting in Mid-levels of Central, however, is less busy than usual working days. Under the trend of home-office, just

Many of those who are physically and mentally disabled suffer from trauma when they go beyond their homes. Ever since the outbreak of the virus, the romance of urban walkers and the conviviality of interactions have slowly disappeared from our vision, perhaps we have come to the “death of urban walkers”. Adding on from the idea of melancholy in fieldwork 2, my documentary looks at an imaginary protagonist who have suffered from anxiety and how he faces the fear of crowdedness and monotony of masked individuals

[Field-Homework 3] My Spatial Story for Masks

Synopsis: Architecture is the protection and shelter for citizens. If an architect is told to design buildings to cope with the environmental crisis, will architecture guard me against the coronavirus? Notice I am going out every day during the peak of the crisis, my trajectories from my place, the apartment plot, to spaces like transportation infrastructures and populous streets, do not seem to protect me from the coronavirus. These structures are not even more protective than the masks. This video tells my trajectory story between places and spaces, portraying how I take this extra step to get masks in my
