This is an interesting question! In my experience of film making, I have not come across “music” as a source of consideration, yet! However, if the genre is musical, then music surely will be a major consideration when designing the costumes, as the “music” or “song” will be a huge part of story telling as well.

I assumed “appearance” you mentioned here is Hair & Make Up? Hair & Make Up is another very important department in filmmaking. In Hong Kong, most of the Costume Designers will also position themselves as Styling Directors to oversee HMU Department and their collaboration with the Costume Team.

Work closely with Costume Designer and depending on the genre / period of the movie, Hair Stylist and Make Up Artist will create the “look” of a given character, with careful consideration of their role / social background / career / sexual orientation / habits & behaviour etc. to complete the character’s overall look.
