[Field-Homework 1] The Inside

Wide-angle:

The pleasant weather lights up people’s lives when a lot of us are having a hard time.

Zoom:

One of the changes since the coronavirus outbreak was that people wash their hands many more times a day.

Focus:

Masks are stored properly at home as they are the crucial physical barriers now.

Crop:

Many still need to go out for work so as to make sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Bird’s eye / aerial:

There have been much fewer people wandering around the streets than before.

Worm’s eye:

Clothes are washed once we take them off.

First person view:

Children probably love staying at home as they have much more time to play all sorts of video games.

Skewed angle:

Disinfecting the floor with bleach is one of the daily routines.

Perspective:

The school is empty as all classes are suspended as required by the Education Bureau.

View frame:

Keeping the window open for natural ventilation decreases the risk of airborne disease transmission.

Chiaroscuro / Contrast:

Everything outside seems uncertain while staying at home makes us feel secure.

Seriality:

Some may spend time cooking at home a lot more than usual, for both food and fun.

How chiaroscuro / contrast conveys the health/environment crisis:

It is easily observed that the left third of the photograph is filled with dull black colour while the right third is catchy due to its high luminance. The photograph was taken at night with indoor lighting so that people’s fear of virus outbreak happening outside can be illustrated through the dark shades. The middle third in grey serves as the part of the transition, representing the changes in a person’s feeling before and after getting home. For the bright side of the photograph, not only does it create a sense of security at home, it embodies people’s hope and faith to defeat the virus as well.

  1. Eunice says:

Adequately respond to the requirements of the task and offer snippets into your domestic life during the ongoing virus context – from cleaning to playing to cooking.
Crop – Your set of images successfully presents the mundane routine of the new normal work life, by capturing quotidien objects in action.
Your technical execution of zoom, focus and crop can be better defined as currently they seem rather interchangeable. Make each more distinct and particular to each of the techniques to correspond to the subject you wish to highlight. For zoom for example, why not zoom in much more to focus on a single subject? Less distraction to what exactly you wish your viewer to focus on.
Your writing description for the chiaroscuro image is thoughtful though it will be much more effective if you the contrast between the dark drapes and the brightness of the room is increased. To heighten feelings of getting home as you have stated, the visual contrast has to be more intentional.
