Field Trip 2: MTR

In the following 5 videos the subject is the door of the train.

Camera is static, subjects are dynamic

Using a static camera though a door to show the movement of the people, emphasizing the busy everyday life of the citizens.

Differentiation of speeds

Though the door of the train to capture what’s going on while the train gradually increase its speed. It’s amazing to see the changing of the view from different part of the MTR station to the outside world. From the instruction, people queuing up, to the hidden construction of the station. When it finally comes to the high-rise building besides the sea, the train is at its highest speed. It’s a strange but amazing feeling to suddenly get out to a larger and brighter world, just like the old Chinese poem saying, “柳暗花明又一村”, which share the similar meaning with “Every cloud has a silver lining.”

Camera is placed in an unexpected location

In this video I place the door in the middle part to separate to different world – inside and outside the train. Its interesting to see the differences between the two world such as the color of the space and the speed of the movement.

Framing

The window of the train doors serve as the frame of observation.

Slow motion

Using slow motion to see from a moving train what‘s going on outside the door in the station. Showing different life of different people.

You have a great series of clips! I really like how you chose the MTR door as your topic and showed various different aspects of it. The static camera and unexpected location are very successfully, but I think you can start thinking about the element of sound and how it can emphasize on your message. You can be selective and only choose some sounds so it engages the viewers but not distract them, such as the MTR announcements or the beeping of doors. Great work, keep up!
