[Field-Homework 3] The Dimming City

Video: https://youtu.be/EAhGs2UtPqQ?si=lZN2yc4YkAg0pRCZ This video aims to discover the history of neon signage in Hong Kong. In the first part of the video, I have showed some of the photos of Nathan Road and Portland Street at 1950s to 1980s, which is the heyday of neon signage in Hong Kong, to introduce the gorgeous image of the street at night when neon signage was still common to the audience so as to compare with the street view nowadays. In the second part of the video, I have showed the street view in Mong Kok nowadays to show that neon signage is

Parallel City: Footbridge and Skywalker

Project Background Elevation and suspension has been core ideas of Hong Kong’s urban spaces, as the tried-and-true way for the dense, populated, hilly city to go is going ‘up’. Multitude and multi-altitude urban planning accustomed city dwellers to live their day at different pace, different direction, with the merits of encountering less congestions and fewer conflicts between brushing shoulders and stepping feet. The skyway systems created possibility for commuters to transverse from their public transport stops to work or home without any relationship to ground level. I chose the theme of Parallel City On one aspect, footbridges ensure safety and walkability

[Field-Homework 3] Information City

https://youtu.be/bmT7y2gsZkc Directed & Produced by Amanda Cai   The theme that I have chosen is Information City: Hong Kong’s Shared Knowledge, focusing on Hong Kong’s MTR (Mass Transit Railway) passageways and trains. Specifically, I focus on the vast amount of information available through and regarding the MTR. On the one hand, Hong Kong MTRs are essentially a gold mine of information, from the multitude of signs denoting exits A, B, C, all the way to N or P, to the several help counters posted throughout every station, to the live signs indicating the number of minutes till the next train.

[Field-Homework 3] Hybrid City

Hybrid City      Hong Kong, a hybrid city, has long been known for its diversity. The University of Hong Kong, as a representative place of Hong Kong, demonstrates this characteristic. The short essay and video will focus on the Chong yuet Ming Building on campus and explain the “hybrid” feature. The importance of the Chong Yuet Ming Building as a building connecting the main campus to the Chong Yuet Ming Chemistry Building is self-evident. it is a modernist building located on a sloping hillside. At the entrance below the hillside are lush trees and lotus ponds. At the exit

[Field-Homework 3] Mobile City – Transportation: The Star Ferry

Essay: The title of this video essay is Mobile City, which means a city that allows residents to move around quickly by various modes of transportation between urban environments. The subject of the video is to figure out one hypothesis through on-site visits and research: the star ferry plays an essential role in marine transportation in hong kong. The video showcases the significance of the Star Ferry, a historic landmark, and the importance of the city’s transportation system from different perspectives, like the visitors’ population, time effectiveness, and the frequently scheduled departure time. This video contains three main parts and

[Field-Homework 3] Disappearing City

The theme of my video is the “disappearing city”. The inspiration of this is on Ackbar Abbas’s comments on building on disappearances that Hong Kong is going through (Abbas, 1997). As its main arguments, Abbas was criticizing heavily on how quick Hong Kong changes and does not let what has been built to mature. And so, I conjectured that there are probably some places in Hong Kong where its architecture is very much distinct from its surroundings and its preservation of context had failed. The Chi Lin nunnery fit this search of mine. The name and the location it was

[Field-Homework 3]:Hybrid City-HK

Description of the theme: Hypothesis statement: Hong Kong is a hybrid city combining elements from different eras and spaces into a single image. Every time I walk through the streets of Hong Kong, I see traditional HongKong tramways and modern buses passing side by side; I see dilapidated tenement  buildings next to new modern skyscrapers; I hear the different languages the pedestrians speak on the road; I smell the flavors of regional cuisines emanating from the various national restaurants. My experiences in Hongkong streets made me feel that Hong Kong is a hybrid city combining elements from different eras and

[Field-Homework 3] Lost in a hybrid city

Lost in a hybrid city I have always been interested in museums. As they tell a story through their inner exhibitions, I thought their exterior architecture might create interesting interactions with the exhibitions. Then I questioned myself about what I wanted to discuss in the video. If I would summarize my experience in Hong Kong into one word, it would be “diversity”. That’s why I chose “hybrid” as the video topic, looking to express hybridization through Hong Kong’s museums. I researched the famous museums in Hong Kong and thought the architectural styles of the Hong Kong Museum of History are
